On our way from Carcassonne to Arles, we detoured to see the Camargue – Arles region, where there are famous white horses, bulls, flamingos, and wild boars.

We stopped for a picnic at the Camarague Museum, a folk museum with interesting displays, a helpful English handout and nature trails (open daily, 10 am – 5 pm; www.museedelacamargue.com), free parking.

From the Museum, we headed to the Domaine de Méjanes at the recommendation of the Camargue Museum staff, to potentially see some Camarague bulls (we didn’t see any there – we passed some on the side of the road – but we did see some white horses) – open daily 9 am – 6 pm, free parking. There were also plenty of people riding horses and eating and drinking…

We also tried to visit the Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau south of the Domaine de Méjanes to see flamingos, but the lines of people were too long, so we gave up. Next time we’ll follow Rick Steves’ recommendations and get off the main roads and take the back roads deep into the Camargue Regional Park to see the wildlife…
